National Center for Calligraphy

Training program and the procedure of studying the calligraphic Arts

The Center aims at achieving its goals through scheduling training sessions for those who want to learn more about Arabic calligraphy. The trainings are carried out by eminent national specialists, including professors at universities, famous calligraphers and professionals.

In order to well organize these training sessions, a program about the basic principles of Arabic calligraphy and Islamic decoration has been scheduled. The programming will last four years. Each year represents one level to inquire after theoretical or practical tests according to the subjects at a certain level.

In addition to the courses dealing with the different types of Arabic calligraphy: kûfî, naskhî, thuluthî, ruq‘a, maghribî, dîwânî et nasta‘lîq…, the trainee receives more information about fundamental theoretical issues like the history of Arabic calligraphy and its evolution, the different calligraphic main schools and the most prominent calligraphers in Tunisia and the Islamic World. The program also includes a course dedicated to theoretical and practical decoration.

The trainee can choose during the fourth year his end-of-training-project. He is supervised by one of the teachers in the Center after the agreement of the committee. The trainee can choose to make an artistic work or a calligraphic painting about one determined theme that will be presented and explained in front of a jury composed of three teachers. A grade will be assigned to the trainee according to a fixed scale.

The training goes approximately in parallel with the academic year. It starts in October and ends in May. At the end of the training, the results will be released and the artistic works of the trainees will be exhibited. A certificate will be delivered to the trainee for each subject, but the moving up into a higher level is determined by obtaining the most of subjects under the conditions established by the Jury of exams, and repeat studying the subjects in which he fails in the following year. As he succeeds in the four levels and after presenting his project of the end of training in front the jury, the trainee receives his certificate with all the grades he has received during the four years.

However, the center is trying to develop a program of collaboration with the Ministry of Employment and Professional Training to equalize the certificate to the Professional certificate in calligraphy, in the hope of restoring the status of Calligrapher craft of Art as it was organized by the Decree number 312 of 1965 before being abolished by the Decree number 650 of 1973.

As the Center is determined to succeed in its missions, the teachers make continuous assessments and end-of-semester exams. They also give homework to the trainees.

The Center also accepts students of craft of heritage, Islamic heritage and Fine Arts about their final year projects. Internship under the supervision of teachers in the Center will be completed and a certificate of internship from the National Center of Calligraphy will be delivered to the concerned student.

This level consists in sessions of revision and supervision in the various types of calligraphy (thuluthî, naskhi, dîwânî, ruq‘a, maghribî, nasta‘lîq, kûfî) and Islamic decoration. However, each trainee must choose at the beginning of the year two types of calligraphy for specialization and examination.

Each trainee has to choose a project in collaboration with one of the Center’s trainers for his end of the training project. This project consists of making an artistic work, which has to be approved and examined by the Jury. Thus, each trainee is engaged to cede, for the collection of the Center, his artistic work after the end of the year exhibition. The trainee’s literary and scientific rights relative to the work are preserved.
